Braces and treatment
How long do braces take?
Treatment with fixed braces usually takes 12 to 24 months. With removable braces for children it follows their growth, often one or two years. Retention follows afterwards.
Do braces hurt?
Fitting doesn't hurt. For the first few days after fitting and after check-ups you feel pressure and tender teeth, which passes in two to four days.
What is the difference between fixed and removable braces?
Fixed braces are bonded to the teeth and move each tooth precisely; they are used for teenagers and adults. Removable braces come out and are used mainly for children, to guide jaw growth.
How often are the check-ups?
Every 4 to 6 weeks with fixed braces, every 4 to 8 weeks with removable braces.
What can I eat with fixed braces?
Almost everything, except hard and sticky food: nuts, hard sweets, toffee, chewing gum and popcorn. Cut hard fruit and vegetables into pieces.
What if a bracket comes off or the wire breaks?
Send us a message. It is usually not urgent — we'll arrange a time to fix it. If the wire pokes, cover it with orthodontic wax.
Why do I have to wear a retainer?
After treatment the teeth tend to move back towards their old position. A retainer keeps the result and is worn long-term, as the orthodontist advises.
Children
When should a child first see an orthodontist?
Around age 7. Problems with jaw growth and bite can then be spotted while treatment is simplest.
Can treatment start while my child still has baby teeth?
Yes, for some problems early treatment with removable braces gives the best results. For many children, though, we simply follow growth until the right moment.
Adults
Can adults wear braces?
Yes, at any age, as long as the gums and bone are healthy. Decay and gum inflammation are treated before treatment starts.
Price and X-rays
How much do braces cost?
The price depends on the type of braces and how complex the case is. You get the exact price in your treatment plan after the check-up and X-rays. For a rough idea, send us a message on WhatsApp or Viber.
Do you take X-rays?
Yes. At the practice we take OPG (panoramic) and cephalometric (profile) X-rays on a NewTom GO unit.
