Orthodontics for adults

It's never too late for straight teeth

More and more adults are straightening teeth that weren't treated in childhood — or that have moved over the years. Teeth can be moved at any age, as long as the gums and bone are healthy.

In shortAdults can wear fixed braces at any age, as long as the gums and bone around the teeth are healthy. Treatment usually takes 12 to 24 months. Decay and gum inflammation are treated first, and at the first visit we check whether treatment is possible for you.

Why adults straighten their teeth

  • Health: straight teeth are easier to clean, so there is less decay and fewer gum problems
  • Bite: less wear on the teeth and less strain on the jaw joint
  • Preparing for other work: sometimes teeth need to move before crowns, bridges or implants
  • Teeth have moved: after an extraction, with age or after childhood treatment without a retainer
  • Confidence: a smile you don't hide in photos

How is treatment different for adults?

In adults the jaws no longer grow, so the problem is solved by moving the teeth. That is why adults are usually treated with fixed braces. The bone is denser than in children, so treatment sometimes takes a little longer. Before treatment it is important that the teeth are restored and the gums are free of inflammation — we check all of this at the first visit and on the OPG X-ray.

Discreet options

Many adults worry how braces will look at work. Clear aligners are far less noticeable than metal brackets.

Fits around work

We are open Monday to Friday until 7 pm, so check-ups fit easily after work. They are short, and the practice is in Breza — no trips to Sarajevo or Zenica.

Questions

Adults and braces — common questions

Is there an upper age limit for braces?

No. What matters is the health of the gums and bone around the teeth, not age. Orthodontic treatment works well for patients in their 40s, 50s and beyond.

How long does treatment take for adults?

Usually 12 to 24 months, depending on the problem. You get the exact duration in your treatment plan after the check-up and X-rays.

Can I have braces if I have crowns or fillings?

Generally yes. Brackets can be bonded to crowns with special preparation. Fillings are no problem. We assess all of this at the check-up.
